The market research institute of IVD Süd counted pedestrian footfall at twelve measuring points in Munich city centre in July 2026. Karlsplatz (Stachus) ranks fourth with an average of 4,316 passers-by per hour.
Key findings
- Across all measuring points, an average of 3,872 passers-by per hour was counted, slightly fewer than in the previous year (2025: 4,018).
- Kaufingerstraße remains the busiest location with 7,306 passers-by per hour, ahead of Weinstraße with 5,867.
- Sendlinger Straße is catching up: its two measuring points rank third and seventh.
- Stachus follows in fourth place, ahead of Rosenstraße and Tal.
Stachus in detail
The measuring point at Karlstor records footfall between Karlsplatz and the pedestrian zone. Numbers there have declined in recent years. IVD cites two reasons: the closure of the Galeria department store at Stachus in autumn 2022 and the standstill of the “Corbinian” project on Schützenstraße following the Signa insolvency. According to IVD, the square itself remains very busy. A new investor has since taken over the Corbinian project, and a new owner could soon be found for the listed Tietz department store as well.
Our view
For our commercial building at Karlsplatz 3, directly on Stachus, the figures confirm the strength of the location: the square remains one of the busiest locations in Munich city centre. With the redevelopment on Schützenstraße, the link to the pedestrian zone should also become more attractive again.
